Pilates:  The Beginning

Pilates was invented by Joseph Hubertus Pilates, a man who was ahead of his time and who cared enormously about the mental, physical, and spiritual health of people. The Pilates program focuses on the body’s core strength (particularly on the abdominal muscles) of the postural muscles which help keep balance and provide alignment to the spine. At the very core of the Pilates method is the belief that the mind controls the muscles of the body.

In Pilates the large muscles composing the center part of the body – abdomen, lower back, hips and buttocks – are referred to as the “powerhouse” and all movements in the method flow from this area.

The Benefits of Pilates for Seniors

Its rapid growth in popularity over the past decade has given rise to many specialized studios and fitness clubs offering Pilates classes well suited to seniors.

Pilates is a deep conditioning of the entire body with a no-impact approach. If done regularly, Pilates tones and sculpts the body and builds long, lean muscles.  Because Pilates workouts do not involve any high strain on the joints and muscles with hard impact, it is an excellent source of exercise for older adults and seniors.
Here are just a few of the amazing benefits that Pilates has to offer seniors and older adults:
  • Improves balance, strength, flexibility
  • Engages the mind through breathing coordination with body mechanics to accomplish excellent body awareness
  • Improves circulation, agility, mobility and stamina
  • Relieves tension and stress
  • Reduces recovery time after an injury
  • Strengthens and aligns the spine
  • Strengthens and deeply conditions the core muscles of the abdominal region
  • Increases energy and overall body wellness

Pilates Alterations to Accommodate the Older Adult

Pilates professionals have begun to alter the method slightly in order to incorporate and specifically cater this exercise technique to older adults and seniors.  Pilates has been known to help prevent osteoporosis, and many senior centers and fitness clubs are now offering seniors’ Pilates classes.  In addition, the different stages of difficulty in every Pilates position allow for modification to address different bodies and ages, which only further encourages older individuals to participate.
You too can feel the benefits of Pilates.  If this sounds like a form of exercise that would suit your physical and mental needs, find Pilates studios or private Pilates teachers in your area.  Enjoy trying a new form of exercise that may just be exactly what you need to improve your strength, flexibility and overall physical condition.
