The Role of Supplements in a Senior's Diet

 
Incorporating the right nutrients into your diet is important throughout all phases of life.  Too much of one mineral or vitamin and not enough of another can cause small, and in some cases, even serious health problems.  As we age, it sometimes becomes difficult for us to determine the correct amount of each vitamin or mineral to consume.  There are several different vitamins and supplements that health professionals recommend seniors include in their diets.  Here we highlight three and explain how, when added to a senior’s diet, they can mean the difference between avoiding a health problem or confronting it head on.

Calcium

As our bones age, they have the tendency to become weak and brittle. This can lead to fractures and breaks, and conditions such as osteoporosis can cause bodily harm due to mobility issues.  To keep your bones strong, add calcium supplements to your diet.  A diet rich in calcium can help promote bone health and prevent bone diseases that make life more difficult in our senior years. Many supplements for seniors include calcium in their concoction, and calcium supplements can also be purchased separately.

Melatonin

Designed for those who have trouble sleeping, melatonin is another useful supplement for seniors. You may have noticed that as you grow older, problems with the body, stress, or simply the natural effects of aging can impact your sleep cycle.  Rather than wait for the body to regulate itself or suffer through sleepless nights, consider taking the natural sleep aid, melatonin. It helps to relax the body and prepare it for sleep more rapidly, leaving you well rested.

Vitamin B12

Anemia is a serious consideration for older adults. If you are over 50, it is wise to be mindful of the blood supply in your body to make sure it is functioning properly and efficiently.  For those with anemia, the blood supply is considered low.  More specifically, red blood cells that carry blood to the heart and other organs is at a lower level than normal.  One way to combat this problem is by taking seniors’ supplements with a concentrated amount of vitamin B12.  B12 helps you maintain your current red blood cell count while promoting continued growth. The result is a body that is less likely to be afflicted with problems such as dizziness, nausea and other anemia-related conditions.
